Principles of GDPR 2018
Data Cleansing or any form of data processing is affected by GDPR – General Data Protection Regulation. GDPR is an EU directive that was written into British law under the Data Protection Act, 2018.
The data cleansing company you choose must provide you with a clear contract and ‘sufficient guarantees’. Any data processing must be done within a GDPR compliance framework that ensures protection for both the data controller (you) and the data processor (us).
At the heart of this regulation is accurate data. Although this is not definitive under GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 does define inaccurate as “incorrect or misleading as to any matter of fact”.
GDPR, Data Protection and your business
Firstly, If you process or control any type of personal data, your company will have to abide by GDPR regulations to ensure any identifiable information is protected from misuse. In addition, you will need to demonstrate consent has been obtained from each individual you retain data for and record how this was achieved.
Furthermore, Individuals have the right be informed about the use of their personal data, right to rectify incorrect information and the right to be removed from your dataset. If personal details need to be updated or deleted it must be done for all copies of the record. For example, the main database and any spreadsheets should both reflect these changes.
What does this mean?
In the event that an individual makes a request about the personal data you hold for them, you are legally obliged to inform them because it is their personal data. This is known as a ‘Subject Access Request’.
With this in mind it is important your data is up-to-date, clean and that accurate records are kept.
